Toronto’s Best Cinnamon Raisin Rice Pudding: Here’s Why

It’s one of those desserts that doubles as a snack at any time of day. But, if made the wrong way, rice pudding can be bland, gooey, and lack flavour. Find out the secret to our Summerhill Market no-fail recipe.

Talk about the ultimate comfort food dessert! Creamy, soft rice pudding enveloped in vanilla with a hint of cinnamon…loaded with juicy California raisins.

It’s one of those desserts that doubles as a snack at any time of day. But, if made the wrong way, rice pudding can be bland, gooey, and lack in flavour. The secret to our Summerhill Market no-fail recipe is that we let it all settle into itself before adding any “extras.”  The starch that releases into the milk adds to the rich, decadent texture so when it has time to set you get a luxurious flavour.

Once we’ve got that perfect base, we don’t use just any raisin – we stir in only the finest California raisins so that you get an added nutritionally sweet superfood with a dash of sunshine.

Did you know, in 1873, legend has it that California’s first raisin crop was actually grown by nature? Apparently, a massive heatwave hit the valley before harvest and most of the grapes dried on the vine before farmers could pick them, and there you have it!  Everyone started tasting these odd dried grapes and realized how delicious they were.  Now we’re enveloping them into our bakery items for that little surprise of sweetness.

We’re very proud to be making and baking with them that’s for sure!
