During the winter, many people are tempted to make their home smell fresh and fragrant. But, when we can’t open the windows to let in natural air, spraying and/or igniting chemicals isn’t always the best option.
Here are some great alternatives:
- Avoid putting out dry bowls of pot pour which often collect dust and lose their scent quite quickly: instead, use the stove top to brew a batch of warm, fragrant fruits and citrus depending on your mood. Try simmering (over low heat) water, sliced lemons, oranges and herbs. Or, toss in cranberries, apples, raspberries and herb de provence. If anything looks like it is about to spoil, toss it in the boiling water. You’d be amazed how it can transform the vibe in your home.
- Tie sprigs of rosemary and thyme in the corner of your shower where they will stay dry. Then turn the shower on and let them bask in the heat and steam from your waterfall. The humidity will activate the herbs’ essential oils. You can even try swapping in eucalyptus if you’re feeling a bit more exotic
- Add a few drops of essential oil to your actual furnace filter if you feel like having a scent sweep your entire home. This can actually help improve air quality while adding a pleasant scent to your house.
- Place dryer sheets in the vents in each room to add a fresh laundry scent in specific rooms. This is a fun way to give that fresh, clean scent without even doing the actual chore. The sheets will eventually dry out so you will need to replace them over time.
- Add drops off essential oils onto tissues and place them behind cushions on couches. This is another great way to add subtle hints of scent throughout the house without going overboard with diffusers. It’s a little soft and covert but when people sit down on the couch they get just enough of a whiff to smell something special.
Overall, if you’re going to go the route of the oils, we would recommend choosing a good essential oil brand to make sure you’re disseminating a good quality scent. With the fruits and herbs, use the whole piece of produce. Toss in the peels which are full of fragrance. And don’t be afraid to mix citrus, sweet and savoury.
